Privacy policy
Fareground is a walking game. To work, it needs to know roughly where you are and how many steps you have taken. This page lists what we collect, why we need it, who else handles it, and how to delete it.
What we collect
- Your account. Your email address, your username and a hashed password; we never store the password itself. If you sign in with Google, we also receive your Google account ID and email.
- Location, while the app is open. We use your position to show the map near you and to check that claims, doorbells and treasure boxes happen where you really are. We keep your most recent position so we can spot impossible jumps. Fareground does not track you in the background.
- Step counts. We read daily step totals from Health Connect (Android) or Apple Health (iPhone), and from your phone's motion sensor while you walk. We store one total per day and nothing else from your health data.
- Where you play, roughly. Your city, region and country, used for the weekly leaderboards and your time zone.
- Game data. The parcels you own, your Walk Points, coins, badges, quests, avatar and settings.
- An optional profile photo, if you upload one.
- A push notification token, if you allow notifications, so we can tell you when a boost ends or someone rings your doorbell.
- Basic device information, such as the app version and the platform, which we use to keep the game fair and fix bugs.
What other players can see
Your username, avatar, badges, profile photo, the parcels you own and your place on the leaderboards are public within the game. Your email address, your exact position and your step history are never shown to other players.
Ads
Fareground shows rewarded ads from Google AdMob, but only when you choose to watch one: to claim a parcel, start a boost or earn bonus Walk Points. AdMob may use your device's advertising ID and collect information as set out in Google's policy. Where the law requires it, for example in the EU and the UK, you'll be asked for consent first, and you can choose non-personalised ads.
Who handles your data
We don't sell your data. We share it only with the services that run the game:
- Render runs our servers, and Neon hosts the database.
- Google handles Google sign-in and ads.
- Expo, together with Google and Apple's push services, delivers notifications.
- Resend sends password reset emails.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to deal with cheating or abuse.
Keeping it and deleting it
We keep your data for as long as you have an account. You can delete your account at any time in the app under Settings → Delete account. That permanently removes your profile, steps, Walk Points, coins and photo, and frees your parcels. We may keep a small amount of records for a limited time where the law requires it or to prevent fraud.
You can also email us to ask for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it.
Children
Fareground is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you think a child has made an account, email us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top. If the change is significant, we'll also let you know in the app.
